Drink of the Week: Mojito (followup)

Posted 1077 days ago

Just wanted to make a quick follow up to my drink review from before. I was off on the sugar!! The sugar in my first mojito wasn't dissolved into the drink, I found it at the bottom of my glass. I'm just drinking my second now, which I made with one teaspoon of cane sugar, stirred thoroughly, and it's just the same as it tasted before :).

So don't wreck your mojito with too much or too little sugar!

Cocktail of the week Review: Mojito

Posted 1077 days ago

Well since fellow Cosiite Eric Hutchins goes to the trouble of posting a drink of a the week now-a-days, I thought I'd start making them... beginning with this week's Mojito.

Eric describes the Mojito as "An apertif that is perfectly suited for warmer seasons, the Mojito stands out as a drink that is well-known but a bit tricky to make properly," which made me a bit nervous to use it as a starting point, but it just happens that I have a couple bottles of Rum, a mint plant, and a mini mart up the street to buy some sugar, so I figure if I screw it up, I can make it again!

Well as it turns out I didn't find it all that difficult to make. Of course I've never had a Mojito to compare it to, but the drink in front of me is refreshing, slightly minty, has a hint of lime and no sweet after taste... so from Eric's description, it tastes like I got it right. I did use a slight variant on Eric's recipe though, using cane sugar in place of simple syrup.

Here are some pics of what mine turned out looking like (a fine looking drink if I do say so my self):

A couple notes on the process: First, heed Eric's point about not "mashing" the mint, it's not necessary, and you'll overpower the drink. I added four peppermint leaves and two lime slices to my glass, covered in sugar and tapped five or six times with the handle of a wooden spoon. That's all you really need to release the flavor of the peppermint. Second, don't be afraid of the sugar. Eric points out that the drink should not have a sweet aftertaste, however if you use too little you'll lose out on the flavor as well. I used ~1.5 teaspoons in a collins glass, and it tastes just right to me. Your mileage may vary if using simple syrup.

So all in all a great a drink... good job Eric, keep posting and I'll keep drinking ;) Also as an interesting and fun point of reference for making the drink, check out Bacardi's Mojito site at bacardimojito.com.

Beers - Good and Bad

"Mmmmm, beer. The cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems" - Homer Simpson

Visited Poughkeepsie this past week -- all in all had a really good time. Matt and I went to Half Time to stock up on beers. We found something called "Sam Adams Triple Bock" which looked really interesting; it was bottled in a small dark blue container, no label, and the neck was wrapped in a rubbery foil, topped with a cork. At just under .00 per bottle, we both got a couple figuring it had to be pretty fantastic.

You can read the rest of my review of the beer here - at eBay where I'm trying to get rid of the crap.

And then, I also got some of my two favorite beers: Golden Monkey (thank you dowem), and Dog Fish Head's 90 Minute IPA. Truly a fantastic IPA; smooth, refreshing, not too bitter. Drinkin' one right now. Mmmmm.

So that's it for me. I'm just trying to stall a little longer before going to work on a Saturday :-\.

Also, if you're in the market for a new cell phone, check this guy out: Sprint Network eBay Store. I just bought a Treo 650 from him for mad cheap and no activation fee. His name's Dennis, nice guy, very helpful, and knew what he was talking about (gave me some info that was confusing on Sprint's site and saved me a bunch of money every month.). Highly recommended. (I wound up calling him directly instead of buying through eBay... so I can't leave him good feedback. This'll have to do ;)).
